I was working on a setup for the Zandvoort track. I simply could not get a good qualification time. 14-15th at best. I tried all kinds of adjustment. Regardless... I remained in the mid to high 1:19 laptime range. My best times were .300-.400 behind what the pack leaders were running. This despite optimizing my gearing to the track to my liking. The leaders were breaking into the 1:18.985 area.
Many times my setups don't do all that well in qualifying but performed well in the race and came through the pack for a win or a top three. But not my Zandvoort setup. I remained stuck at back of the pact during several unpleasant test races.
Frustrating to watch. I had set things up to give me good straight speed. I had that... but it wasn't paying off.
Then I finally took a closer look a the 'default' setup. It had the wings set at 4/4. I was running with 2/2 to get more speed. But I had noticed that I was not keeping pace on the tracks long twisting turns. I bumped my wings up to 4/4 and 'surprise' I dropped over .200 off my best time. Now that was progress. I brought the front wing up to 5 and dropped some more time. I had to make minor gearing changes with the higher wings.
I brought the Rear Wing up to 5 and broke into the 1:18.995 laptime range!
That felt great! I assigned my new setup to my two Matra team mates and ran another test race. Interestingly, I even beat my qualification lap time 'in the race'.
